On a waitlist for therapy? Here's what to do next
Being told there is a three month wait when you or your kid is struggling right now is a hard thing to hear. You did the brave part. You asked for help. Then the system told you to come back later.
You do not have to just sit on that list and hope. Here is what we would do if we were in your shoes.
First, get on more than one list. A waitlist is not a commitment. Ask every place how long the wait really is, and whether they offer in-person sessions or only video. Many of the big online platforms are virtual only, and for some kids a screen is not where they open up.
Second, check your insurance before you assume the cost. We work with Aetna, Cigna, Kaiser, Medicare and Medi-Cal, and many people are surprised by what they actually owe. Here is our rates and insurance page.
Third, if you or your kid is 25 or under, you may qualify for free care through a California state program called CYBHI, the California Youth Behavioral Health Initiative. For people who qualify, that can mean no cost at all. College students and young adults can read how it works here.
Fourth, ask for a quick conversation before you commit. We offer a free 15 minute consultation by text, so you can ask your questions and see if we feel like a good fit before you do anything else.
We started Creative Connections because we kept hearing the same story from families. Long waits, complicated systems, and no one who felt like a person on the other end. We built something different. Therapists who are thoughtfully matched to you, sessions in person in Newhall or by video, and a team that cares about getting you seen.
If you ever feel unsafe or in crisis, call or text 988 or go to your nearest emergency room.
