What to expect at your child's first therapy session

If you're a parent, the first session can feel like a big step. You may wonder what your child will be asked, whether you'll be in the room, and how to prepare them. Here's what it usually looks like.

The first visit is mostly about getting comfortable. The therapist gets to know your child, and your child gets to know the therapist and the space. Younger kids often use play, drawing or games, and there's no pressure to say the right thing.

Parents are part of the process. Depending on your child's age, the therapist may start by talking with you, spend time with your child, and then check in with you both at the end. You'll have a chance to share what you've noticed and what you hope will change.

You can help by keeping the message simple and calm. Many parents say something like, "You're going to meet someone who helps kids with big feelings." It's okay to say you don't know exactly what will happen.

Our Newhall office is easy to reach from Valencia, Saugus, Canyon Country and Stevenson Ranch, and video is an option for many families. Kids, teens and young adults 25 and under may qualify for therapy at no cost to your family.
